Moses spent forty days and forty nights speaking with God. The people panicked without a leader to guide them. They demanded a god they could fashion in their own image. Aaron gave them a golden bull. The Hebrews were just liberated after 430 years in slavery. They didn’t know how to live in freedom. They didn’t know how to serve a free God.

Are we any different? Be careful before you look down on your spiritual ancestors. We never witnessed the ten plagues of Egypt, but the liberated Hebrews never heard the full Gospel message or were empowered with the Holy Spirit. We don’t dance around golden bulls, but we certainly distract ourselves with all sorts of false idols. Exodus 32 is just as relevant as the day the events happened.

The Good News is that God wants to forgive. The ministry of Jesus Christ teaches us that God wants to be reconciled to sinful humanity. Come to church this Sunday to hear the startling story of God changing his mind.
